A man refuses to buy groceries despite his wife showing him their actual, healthy bank balance on her phone in real time. Why does this remain a delusion of poverty rather than resolving once he sees the evidence?
By definition, a delusion does not alter in response to factual evidence, and this vignette makes that as concrete as possible: real-time, directly presented evidence (an actual bank balance shown on a phone) still fails to shift the belief. This complete unresponsiveness, rather than the plausibility of the belief's content alone, is the clinical marker of a genuinely delusional conviction.
